The E1 tram shaped Vienna's cityscape for decades. First used on Vienna's public transport lines in 1966, it represented an evolution of the previous Type E vehicles. Despite a similar appearance, the E1 was equipped with a significantly more powerful engine, offering improved acceleration and greater operational safety in dense city traffic.
Over Four Decades in Daily Use
A total of 338 vehicles of this type were built, reliably serving on Vienna's lines for over 40 years. Whether on heavily frequented inner-city routes or longer suburban lines, the E1 quickly became an integral part of urban public transport. It was not until 2022 that the last of these iconic trams was finally retired from regular passenger service.
International Use and Cult Status
The E1 also found a second home outside of Vienna. Vehicles of this type were passed on to Rotterdam and various cities in Silesia (Poland), among others, where they continued to operate in regular service. Thanks to its distinctive design, direct driving feel, and long service life, the E1 continues to enjoy cult status among tram fans to this day.
